To Whom It May Concern:
I am an individual taxpayer. I am writing to inform you that I do not agree with the IRS's proposed regulation that would allow tax preparers to sell my return information to third-party marketers, data brokers, or others.
I consider my tax return to be among my most private documents. I share very intimate details of my financial and private life with my tax preparer, most of which is in turn reported to the IRS. I realize I must provide information necessary to ensure my tax return is complete. However, I do not expect my information to be used for any purpose other than the need to file a tax return.
I understand that under the proposed rule, sharing my tax return information with outsiders would require my consent. However, I do not believe this is adequate to protect my privacy or the privacy of millions of other Americans who annually file tax returns. If I am in a hurry or am rushed through signing documents, I am concerned that I may give my consent, even if that is not what I want to do.
If the IRS makes this rule final, I should at least have a chance to take all my signed documents home to review them. Then I should be able to withdraw my consent.
Sincerely,
