 Consumer Advisor  

Location: Privacy Rights Clearinghouse – San Diego, CA 
4 hours per day (TBD), Monday - Friday 
$16 – 22 / hour depending on experience

  • Experience in customer service required
  • Strong spoken and written communication skills
  • Excellent online research and writing abilities
  • MUST be very comfortable with computers, computer software and the Internet
  • Proficient at Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Proficient at keyboarding; at least 55 words per minute
  • Ability to learn website content management system; Basic knowledge of HTML preferred; Experience working with Drupal is a plus
  • Experience working with nonprofits preferred
  • Knowledge of public policy, consumer protection law or privacy issues is a plus


  • Responsible for the PRC's Online Complaint Center (OCC)
    • Answer consumer inquiries (see below) or triage as necessary
    • Send monthly reports to appropriate government agencies
    • Manage the company database that feeds the "smart feature"
    • Act as point person for staff questions and feedback about the OCC
    • Provide monthly reports to staff that capture complaint volume and trends
    • Assess the OCC on a regular basis for staff and consumer usability; recommend changes and new features
    • Work with contractors to implement OCC changes, improvements and new features
  • Responsible for ALL consumer inquiries
    • Inquiries are received via the OCC, phone, mail and email
    • Advisor must research each inquiry and respond appropriately and in a timely manner
    • Ensure all inquiries are captured in the OCC
  • Responsible for answering the phone
    • Screen and direct calls
    • Take and relay messages
  • Assist staff with promoting the OCC and PRC's Fact Sheets on social media (for examples, see our Twitter and Facebook accounts)
  • Identify and send to staff trending privacy articles and news stories
  • Must adhere to the PRC's Privacy Policy; handle and protect confidential and sensitive data with integrity
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned, such as researching and writing Fact Sheets
