Submit your privacy questions and complaints to us through our Online Complaint Center (OCC). Privacy Rights Clearinghouse’s dedicated Consumer Advisor responds to everyone, and we work very hard to stay up-to-date on a wide range of privacy issues

Here are some common questions we receive about the OCC.

Q.  What types of questions do you take?

A.  Questions that pertain to privacy.   We focus more on “consumer privacy” issues than anything else, but we can likely point you in the right direction even if your question does not fall within our expertise.  In case you are wondering, the term “consumer privacy” refers to how companies handle your information (rather than the government or another person).

Q. I have a simple question, why can’t I just call you for an answer?

A. Chances are, it is not as simple as you think.  We want to help provide you relevant resources instead of giving you an off-the-cuff answer.  Almost every time we receive a question, our staff needs to do research to provide a good answer.

Q. I need a lawyer. Will PRC represent me?

A.  No. We do not give legal advice, we do not litigate at all, and we will not take direct action on behalf of anyone.   However, we may be able to guide you to a relevant resource.

Q.  Why do you ask for complaints if you don’t provide legal advice or take direct action on behalf of individuals?

A.  There are a few reasons for this.  We may be able to direct you to the appropriate place to file your complaint.  In addition, if you are interested in sharing your complaint with the media, we may be able to connect you with a reporter who is interested in your story.  Lastly, we use the complaints we receive to tell others (such as policymakers and regulators) about issues that individuals are facing -- but we do not reveal identifying information about the situation unless you ask us to. 

Q. Do you share the complaints with anyone?

A. We do not share individual complaints unless you ask us to.

Q. Will you answer questions on Twitter or Facebook?

A.  To protect your own privacy, we suggest sending your questions to our OCC unless they are very general and you don’t mind them being public!
